Nine days of Motorcycle Week put a year of boots through a Weirs Beach rental. We’re the crew that gets called the Monday after — and the rest of the year for the houses off Union Avenue that never see a tourist.
Laconia’s carpet calendar has a hard edge to it, and it’s the third week of June. Motorcycle Week runs nine days out of Weirs Beach — June 12 through 21 this year, the 103rd running — and the state figures about 300,000 people come through for it. A good chunk of them sleep in Laconia. Motel cottages along Lakeside Avenue, the short-term rentals the city has permitted (93 of them at last count, most of them at the Weirs), the spare bedrooms people rent out once a year and swear they’ll never do again. Every one of those floors takes beach sand from Endicott Rock, road grit off Route 3, and whatever comes off a pair of riding boots. Then the guests leave and the owner calls us.
So here’s how we work it. The week after the rally we run Weirs Beach and the Route 3 strip almost exclusively, and we book it tight, because the July renters start showing up before the last bike has cleared the boardwalk. If you own a unit up there, get on the list before the rally ends. Not after. After is when everybody calls.
The other half of our Laconia work has nothing to do with tourists. Lakeport, the neighborhoods behind the hospital on Highland Street, the streets off Union Avenue — those are year-round family homes, and the carpet there gets ground down the ordinary way. Kids, a dog, a long winter of sidewalk sand riding in on boots. Different job. Same truck.
Weirs Beach owners: the city’s rewritten rental rules cap you at two guests a bedroom. Fine. But six people in a three-bedroom cottage for nine days is still more traffic than most carpet sees in a season — clean it before the July bookings, not after the season ends.
A rental that just hosted a rally crowd isn’t dirty the way a family room is dirty. It’s gritty. The sand off the beach and the fine black grit off Lakeside Avenue work down to the base of the pile, and if you just run a rental machine over the top you polish the surface and leave the abrasive underneath, where it’ll keep cutting fibers all summer. So we vacuum first, slowly, with a real commercial upright. Takes longer than people expect. That’s most of the job.
Then a pre-spray on the walk paths — door to bed, bed to bathroom, the strip in front of the couch — a little agitation, and truck-mounted hot-water extraction to flush it all back out. We groom the pile so it dries standing up instead of matted flat. Four to six hours later you can walk on it in socks. If there’s a rug in a cottage that’s seen more sand than a cottage should, we’ll tell you if it’s worth cleaning or worth replacing. Might cost us the job. That’s fine.
A whole-cottage or whole-house cleaning runs $150–$350 depending on rooms and stairs and how much sand is down in there. One room, around $45. We give you the flat number before the truck leaves the yard. Turnover owners with several units: ask about lining them up the same day.
Usually same day or next day if you booked before the rally ended. The week after June 21 fills fast because every unit at the Weirs empties at once. Call during the rally, we’ll pencil you in for the day after your checkout, and the carpet will be dry before your July guests arrive.
Yes. It’s an abrasive, and it settles at the bottom of the pile where a vacuum from the closet doesn’t reach. Every step grinds it against the fibers. That’s why a beach cottage carpet goes dull and thin in the walkways years before the rest of the room does.
Both, all year. Summer is rentals, but from October through May most of our Laconia work is regular houses — Lakeport, the streets off Union Avenue, up around the hospital. Winter sidewalk sand and a dog are plenty to justify a cleaning by spring.
With truck-mounted extraction and grooming, four to six hours in most cottages. Open the windows, run a fan, and a morning cleaning is dry by afternoon check-in. Humid lake air slows it a little, so on a muggy day we’ll schedule you first thing.
Couches, chairs, and tables, yes, and we clean under them. Beds and dressers stay put and we clean around them. In a small cottage that’s most of the floor anyway, and it keeps the price where we quoted it.
