Laconia has run a sled dog race since 1929. This is a dog town, and dog towns have carpet problems that shampoo doesn’t fix. We find where the urine actually went, treat it there, and pull it out of the pad instead of perfuming the top.
The World Championship Sled Dog Derby starts and finishes in the Opechee State Forest at Old North Main Street and Route 106, and it’s been running since 1929 — Leonhard Seppala of the Alaska serum run won the first one. Fifteen-mile course, teams of fourteen or sixteen dogs. It got called off for no snow in 2021, 2023, and 2024, which tells you something about our winters lately. Point is, people here have dogs. Big ones. Plural.
And the dogs live on the lake. They swim off Bond Beach and the Opechee Park cove, they go in Winnisquam, they come out and shake and go straight to the living room. Wet-dog smell in a carpet is mostly lake water and skin oil, and it comes out with a good extraction. Urine is a different animal. It goes through the carpet into the pad and sometimes the subfloor, dries into a salt, and every humid July evening on Lake Opechee that salt pulls moisture out of the air and the smell wakes back up. That’s why the rental-machine job smelled fine for a week.
Old dogs in the pre-war houses near downtown, puppies in the Weirs rentals, the barn cat that moved indoors out toward Route 106 — all the same fix. Find it, treat it, extract it below the surface.
Winter’s the worst for it. A dog that won’t go out in a Laconia February will pick a corner, and with the windows shut you won’t smell it until April. When the thaw comes and the house opens up, walk the corners with your nose before you call us. We’ll bring the UV light for the rest.
We start with a UV light in a dark room, because what you can smell and what you can see are two different maps. Then a moisture meter to tell whether it stopped at the carpet or went into the pad. Spots that stopped at the carpet get an enzyme digester that eats the odor compounds — it isn’t a cover scent, it’s bacteria doing a job — and then a hot rinse. Spots that went through get sub-surface extraction: we flood the area with the treatment and pull it back up through the pad with a tool made for exactly that.
If a pad is saturated, we’ll say so. No amount of cleaning fixes a pad that’s been a litter box for three years, and swapping that one section is cheaper than cleaning it four times. Everything we use is safe for the dog and the kids once it’s dry. Keep them off it till then and you’re done with it.
Spot treatment runs about $40–$75 per area. Full sub-pad decontamination on a bigger problem gets quoted after we look at it with the light — it depends on how much floor is involved, and we’d rather measure than guess.
Because dried urine is a salt, and salt pulls moisture from the air. On a muggy evening on Lake Opechee or Winnisquam, the crystals in the pad rehydrate and the smell comes back. Surface cleaning never reaches them. Enzyme treatment and sub-pad extraction do.
Yes, that one’s the easy one. Wet-dog odor is lake water and skin oil in the fibers, and hot-water extraction lifts it out. It’s the urine spots underneath you didn’t know about that take the real work, and we check for those while we’re there.
Yes. The enzyme and rinse products are safe for dogs, cats, and kids once the carpet is dry. Keep everybody off the treated areas for the afternoon, then it’s fine. No lingering chemical smell either, which matters in a house with a nose like a husky’s.
The odor can almost always be neutralized. The visible stain sometimes can’t be, if the urine has bleached or dyed the fiber. And if it’s soaked the pad, replacing that section is the honest fix. We’ll tell you which you’ve got before we quote.
Carpet, area rugs, and upholstery. The wool rug in an old Lakeport house gets a gentler treatment than the wall-to-wall in a Weirs rental, but the principle’s the same: find it, treat it, extract it.
