New Durham sits on the Strafford County side of the Lakes Region, about 2,700 people spread over forty-three square miles with Route 11 running through the middle of it. Merrymeeting Lake is the north end of town — 1,233 acres, a hundred and twenty feet deep in the hole, and about as clear as water gets in this state. South of the village the land climbs toward Copple Crown and drops off into the Cocheco and Ela headwaters. We clean carpet, upholstery, tile and dog accidents in all of it, camps and year-round houses both.
Merrymeeting is a cold, spring-fed, oligotrophic lake, which is a mouthful that means almost nothing grows in it and you can see straight down. People here are protective of that, and they should be — the watershed is only about 5,600 acres, and the share of it under permanent protection went from four percent in 2018 to thirty-five percent by 2021, mostly through the Birch Ridge Community Forest that SELT, Moose Mountains Regional Greenways, the Merrymeeting Lake Association and the town put together starting in June of 2019. What that means for our work is that we get asked questions out here we don’t get asked in Laconia. What’s in the pre-spray. Where does the wastewater go. Fair questions on a lake with loons nesting on the west shore and a fish hatchery sitting at the base of the dam. The housing stock tells its own story too: North Shore Road and South Shore Road were mostly plain summer camps into the 1980s, and through the nineties a lot of those came down and went back up as real houses. So on one road we’ll do a 1960s camp with the original carpet and two doors down a place with wool runners on three floors.
Ask whoever cleans your carpet where the dirty water ends up and what’s in the pre-spray before they start. On a lake like Merrymeeting that’s not a fussy question, it’s the right one — and if somebody can’t answer it in plain language, that tells you something.
