Upholstery Cleaning in Hebron, NH

Furniture in Hebron tends to be older than furniture in most towns, because a lot of the houses are. Around the common most of them went up in the first half of the 1800s, and the chairs inside have often been in the family since well before anyone now living there was born.

Upholstery Cleaning in Hebron

The Hebron village common has been town property since 1799, and the whole district — thirteen major buildings, most of the houses built before 1850 — went on the National Register in 1985. The town hall sits in what was a chapel in 1909; the library is a 1915 grange hall. That’s the neighborhood. In houses like that you find horsehair-stuffed side chairs, a camelback sofa somebody’s great-aunt had recovered in the seventies, and a wing chair by the stove that has taken thirty winters of wood smoke.

Wood heat is the big one. A stove or a fireplace lays down a fine film you can’t see on a single day and can’t miss after ten years. It settles on the arms and the top of the backrest first. Light linen goes ivory, then tan. People assume it’s age. Often it comes out.

Then there’s the Hebron Fair, on the common the last Saturday of July since 1952, with its rummage tables and Vintage Shoppe raising money for the Union Congregational Church. Good place to find a solid old armchair. Also a good place to bring one home that has been in somebody’s barn. We see a few of those every August.

Hebron Tip

Before you bring a rummage-sale chair inside, leave it in the sun on the porch for a day and check under the seat deck for mouse sign. Saves a lot of trouble.

Old Fabric Gets Tested Before It Gets Wet

Every piece gets a fiber check and a hidden-spot test before we commit to a method. Cotton and linen can brown if they’re over-wet. Old dyes bleed. Some vintage fabrics are rayon blends that shrink when you look at them sideways. And the cleaning code on the tag, if there even is a tag on a chair from 1890, doesn’t tell you what happened to it in the eighty years since.

For soot film we start dry — a chemical sponge pulls a surprising amount off the arms before anything else happens. Then a low-moisture clean matched to the fiber, careful rinsing, and drying with air movers so the stuffing underneath doesn’t stay damp. Horsehair and cotton batting hold water a long time. That’s the danger in old furniture and it’s why we go slow.

If a piece is too fragile, we’ll tell you to take it to an upholsterer instead of letting us near it. Might cost us the job. That’s fine.

A standard sofa runs $90–$150; loveseats and chairs come in under that. A parlor set, a couple of wing chairs and the camp porch cushions get one combined number quoted before we start. Fabric protector is optional and priced per piece.

Common Questions

Can you clean a chair with horsehair stuffing?

Usually, if the fabric is sound. Horsehair and cotton batting hold moisture, so we use a low-moisture method, keep the rinse light, and dry it with air movers. If the cover is brittle or the stuffing is already breaking down, we will tell you that an upholsterer is the right call.

Will cleaning remove the yellow tint from a couch near the wood stove?

Often a lot of it. Smoke film is oily and sits on the fiber surface, so a dry sponge pass followed by a fiber-safe clean lifts most of it. If the fabric itself has yellowed from sun or age, cleaning will brighten it but will not bring back the original color.

I bought an old armchair at a rummage sale and it smells like a barn. Can that be fixed?

Usually the smell is fixable if it is in the fabric and the top layer of padding. We clean, treat for odor, and dry it thoroughly. If mice have nested inside, the stuffing has to come out, and that is an upholsterer job rather than a cleaning job.

Do you clean camp furniture and porch cushions?

Yes. Porch cushions with outdoor fabric are usually easy and quick. Indoor camp furniture that has spent a few damp winters in an unheated building can carry mildew odor, which takes a dedicated treatment and good drying. Tell us what you have and we will price it together.

How long until we can sit on it?

Most pieces are dry enough to use in four to six hours with windows open or the heat on. Older furniture with thick natural stuffing can take longer, and we will tell you before we leave. Keep pets off it until it is fully dry.
