Close to nine thousand people go to a show out on Meadowbrook Lane and a good number of them sleep on somebody’s couch in Gilford afterward. Add a sunscreen-and-lake-water summer off Ellacoya and that’s a sofa doing real work. We clean it without soaking it.
The Pavilion opened out on Meadowbrook Lane in August of 1996 and it changed the shape of summer in this town. It seats close to nine thousand — just under six thousand under the roof, the rest out on the lawn — and it runs show after show from late spring into fall. People don’t drive back to Massachusetts at eleven at night. They stay. Spare room, pull-out, sectional, whatever’s open.
Then there’s the beach side of it. Ellacoya is 82 acres with six hundred feet of sand on the southwest shore, open from late April to Columbus Day weekend, with a 37-site RV park attached to it. Between that and all the private waterfront, a Gilford summer means people coming off the water and sitting down damp. Sunscreen, bug spray, lake water, a little sand. None of it shows up the day it happens. It shows up in August, when the cushion has a shine on the arm and a smell you can’t quite place.
So that’s most of our upholstery work here. Summer furniture that got used hard and politely. Sectionals, sleeper sofas, sunroom sets, the wicker out on a screened porch. Every so often a set of boat cushions somebody hauled up from Glendale.
If you host for shows at the Pavilion, put a washable cover on the guest-room sleeper for the season. Ten minutes in the laundry beats us pulling August back out of a foam mattress in October.
Sunscreen is oil and it is built specifically to not wash off. That’s the whole point of it. On a light fabric it goes on invisible, sits in the fibers all summer quietly collecting dust, and then one day you notice the headrest and both arms have gone a shade darker than the rest of the piece. Some of the avobenzone-type sunscreens will also turn a faint rust color as they age. That one surprises people.
It comes out, mostly, but not with water alone. We read the manufacturer’s cleaning code first — W, S, WS or X — and test a hidden spot, because a couch tagged S wants solvent and will water-ring on you if you ignore that. Then a solvent pre-treatment on the oily areas, dwell time, and low-moisture extraction with the hand tool. Low moisture is the part that matters. You want the cushion damp, not wet, because a soaked foam core in a lake house in August is exactly how you end up with the smell you were trying to get rid of.
Dry time is two to four hours with a fan on it. And if a piece is genuinely past saving — dry-rotted foam, split seams, a fabric that’s given up — we’ll say so before we charge you to clean it.
A standard sofa runs $90–$150. Loveseats and chairs come in under that. A sectional plus a sunroom set gets one combined number before we start, and we’ll fold the boat cushions into it rather than nickel you for them.
Usually most of it. Sunscreen is oil, so it wants a solvent pre-treatment and dwell time, not just hot water. Set-in avobenzone can leave a faint yellow cast that won’t fully go. We test a hidden spot first and tell you what to expect before we run the whole piece.
Right after the concert season winds down, so late September. The summer traffic is over, the house is quiet, and you’re not fighting humid lake air for dry time. If you rent the place out, do it between bookings instead and leave a fan on it overnight.
Two to four hours with a fan, usually. We use a hand tool and low moisture on purpose — soaking a foam core in August on this lake is how a couch ends up smelling worse than it did before. Thick sectional cushions take the longest of anything.
Yes, and we’d rather do them on the same visit. Vinyl and marine fabric take a different approach than a living-room sofa, and screened-porch wicker cushions usually need a mildew treatment more than a cleaning. Bring them up off the dock and we’ll handle it all in one stop.
Then we test. Most furniture hides the code under a cushion or on the deck beneath the seat, and if there’s genuinely nothing there we start with the gentlest method on a spot nobody sees. We don’t guess on an expensive piece. If we can’t determine it safely we’ll say so rather than risk your couch.
