Campton is the town at the bottom of the Waterville Valley road — about 3,340 people spread across Campton Lower Village, Campton Upper Village, West Campton, Blair, and Campton Hollow, where the Mad River comes down out of the notch and meets the Pemigewasset. Interstate 93 runs straight through it at Exits 27 and 28, and Route 49 climbs eleven miles from Exit 28 up the Mad River to the ski area. That makes Campton a place people drive through in wet boots, and the carpet work here reflects it.
Campton’s carpet problem is a winter problem first. Route 49 is the only road to Waterville Valley, and it starts here at Exit 28 — which means from December into April this town gets the full traffic of a ski season, along with the treated sand-and-salt mix that comes off I-93 and NH 175 on every boot and floor mat. Salt is worse than dirt in a carpet: it stays hygroscopic in the pile, pulls damp back out of the air, and leaves a stiff white bloom in the traffic lanes and stair treads long after the mud has dried. Houses along the corridor that get rented by the week or the weekend take that in concentrated doses, with a fresh set of guests and a fresh set of boots every few days and no real chance to dry out in between. Then the seasons turn over: mud season on the dirt roads out toward Blair and Beebe River, and a summer of river sand tracked up from the Pemigewasset, from Livermore Falls, and out of the campgrounds off Route 49 and US 3. The older houses in the Lower and Upper Villages add their own wrinkle — wide-board floors with wool or braided rugs laid over them, which want a fiber test and a controlled, low-moisture method rather than a heavy soak, and most of them are heated with wood, which lays a gray film into light carpet and into the upholstery nearest the stove over a full winter of burning.
If your place is on the Route 49 corridor and it works through ski season, get the salt out in April rather than waiting for summer — it doesn’t vacuum out, and every damp day it sits there it draws moisture back into the pile. Renting the house by the weekend? Two cleanings a year, one after the last skier and one after Labor Day, will keep you ahead of it.
