Bridgewater is the east-shore town on Newfound Lake — a rural Grafton County community of about 1,160 people with no real village center, strung along Route 3A between Bristol and Plymouth. Camps and cottages sit down on the water at Whittemore Point, year-round houses climb the hill toward Peaked Hill and Bridgewater Mountain, and the carpet work splits cleanly along that line.
Newfound is one of the coldest, clearest lakes in the state — 183 feet deep at its deepest and holding something like 98 billion gallons — and the shoreline that feeds it is coarse sand and grit. That sand is the whole story down on the water. It comes up from the beaches at Whittemore Point on feet, towels, and dogs from June through Labor Day, and it works straight down into traffic lanes and stair treads where a household vacuum will never touch it. Many of those places are rented by the week now, so the same carpet takes a full season of it without a break. Up on the hill, off Bridgewater Mountain Road and the back roads toward Hebron and New Hampton, it’s a different job: full-time houses on wood and pellet heat, where a winter of burning lays a fine gray film into light carpet and into whatever upholstery sits nearest the stove, and the sand-and-salt mix off Route 3A rides in on boots from November into April. The older camps along the shore often still hold wool or oriental rugs, and those want a fiber test and a controlled, low-moisture method rather than a heavy soak — a lakeside cottage that isn’t heated all week is a slow-drying building.
If your place on Newfound is a rental, get the carpet done mid-season rather than waiting for October. Newfound sand is sharp, and every week it sits in the pile it’s cutting fibers underfoot. If you’re up on Bridgewater Hill and heating with wood, book after the last fire instead — usually April — so the soot comes out all at once.
